From the "This is how rumors get started" department

Updated 12/10

I thought this one was worth passing along. It's a highly unsubstantiated rumor, so take it for what it's worth.

The rumor comes via R.S. Janes at BartBlog (a.k.a. Bartcop). It claims that MSNBC may have found that host they've been looking for. And it ain't Rosie O'Donnell. This rumor claims that MSNBC regular and Air America Radio host Rachel Maddow may get the nod. Here's more:

Finally, a note under the door says Air America Radio’s Rachel Maddow will be offered the hour following Keith Olbermann on MSNBC, but only with a ‘funny’ co-host, as it appears increasingly unlikely that The Daily Show’s Jon Stewart or Bill Maher and others will step in for the kind of unimpressive money and short-term contract that are on the table. Rumor is the cable channel’s execs are impressed with Maddow, but she’s not perceived as ‘funny’ enough by herself for the uptempo news/comedy format they’re seeking. Paul F. Tompkins and Joel McHale, that guy Keith has on who hosts E!s “The Soup,” have been mentioned as co-hosts, as well as Rachel’s AAR colleague Randi Rhodes, although Randi is seen by some as too partisan and combative. If this goes through, the prime-time weekday line up for MSNBC would then be “Hardball”; “Countdown with Keith Olbermann”; the as-yet-unnamed Rachel Maddow show, and “Live with Dan Abrams.” Expect a press release in January.

Again, this is just a rumor, and one that hasn't hit the big media gossip sites yet, so do with it what you wish.

UPDATE: TVNewser says a test pilot for a potential new show has been taped, featuring Maddow and MSNBC prime time VP Bill Wolff.

Hello, MSNBC? Are you aware that there is a guy named Sam Seder who only works at AAR on Sunday? Or how about that Maron fella? He's got TV experience, he's funny as hell, and he works really, really well with Kent Jones, too.

I don't know about anyone else, but Dan Abrams is getting an e-mail from me this weekend.

this would be great, as it would give rachel the huge audience she deserves. but i'd be sad to see aar lose her, and she may in fact be better on radio than video.

and kent jones isn't funny enough for msnbc? he's hilarious! i've never seen him live, though....

This would make me downright prescient.

Jill, no offense but I think you are a bit too obsessed with Sam Seder. Can you at least accept that Maddow is familiar to the MSNBC folks, familiar enough that she is in the running for a full-time position? Quite frankly, I think she'd be perfect for the job.

Why would AAR lose Rachel? Ever hear of O'Reilly and Hannity -- they do radio AND TV, and their radio shows are longer than Rachel's. Since it sounds like MSNBC wouldn't be paying a whole lot of salary and neither is AAR, it wouldn't surprise me to see her keep her radio gig. Especially if she'd get a co-host for the TV show. It would be win-win for both Rachel and AAR.

ltr, I agree with Jill. I think Seder and Maddow would work great together, and would mellow out each other's rough edges.

It's only because he got such a bum deal that some of us are such boosters of his. He really is talented, smart, and, yes (sigh), funny...

If true, this would be fantastic! But why not pair her with Kent Jones? Although, I also could see her with Seder.

LT has a pretty good batting average for rumors lately. I hope this one turns out to be true, too.

This is a step forward for MSNBC. Now if they could only dump "Morning Joe" and bring in Stephanie Miller.

I'm not sure why Maddow needs a comic side-kick (a term first applied to people like Gabby Hayes, Pat Buttrum and Edgar Buchanan in Republic westerns). But maybe somebody to play off would be a good. Chemistry is important here. Just because somebody is good on his own (or was good with another partner) doesn't mean they will be a good match here.

I'm also worried that NBC couldn't get who they wanted so they'll try to turn Rachel into something she's not.

Well, Kent Jones is now 'available' and Seder (I share J-Brill's appreciation) was on last night with KO looking very clean.

Rachel said on her show last night that the rumors aren't true.
